What we do

Hackathons have experienced a steep rise in popularity over the past decade.

Practitioners and researchers have developed a vast treasure trove of (practical) knowledge organizing and studying hackathon events, but our understanding of motivations and best practices is largely limited to single domains.

We are building a growing and interdisciplinary community of practitioners and researchers of hackathons, hackweeks, data dives, codefests, edit-a-thons and other time-bounded events in order to foster an exchange of knowledge and best practices. The first workshop was held online and hosted by the Lorentz Center, Leiden, The Netherlands from December 6 to 10, 2021.

The second workshop was conducted as a hybrid event at the Flatiron Institute in New York, NY, USA and online from October 3 to 7, 2022.

The third workshop was held as a hybrid event at the SDG Solution Space in Geneva, Switzerland, and online from November 6 to 10, 2023.
