Hack the Hackathon
An unconference series and interdisciplinary community
exploring scientific collaboration, learning, and
civic engagement through hackathons.
Hackathons have experienced a steep rise in popularity over the past decade.
Practitioners and researchers have developed a vast treasure trove of (practical) knowledge organizing and studying hackathon events, but our understanding of motivations and best practices is largely limited to single domains.
We are building a growing and interdisciplinary community of practitioners and researchers of hackathons, hackweeks, data dives, codefests, edit-a-thons and other time-bounded events in order to foster an exchange of knowledge and best practices. You can find more information about our next workshop below.
San Diego, Nov 18-22, 2024
Hack the Hackathon 4 will be held as a hybrid meeting at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego in San Diego, California, USA and online. We welcome all interested to apply soon.
The first workshop was held online and hosted by the Lorentz Center, Leiden, The Netherlands from December 6 to 10, 2021. For more information, please click on the link below.
The second workshop was conducted as a hybrid event at the Flatiron Institute in New York, NY, USA and online from October 3 to 7, 2022. For more information, please click on the link below.
The third workshop was held as a hybrid meeting both at the at the SDG Solution Space in Geneva, Switzerland, and online. For the third iteration, our goal was to build on conversations started at the first two workshops, as well as develop new ideas and initiatives, and continue to grow and expand the community of hackathon practitioners and researchers. That year, we joined forces with IdeaSquare at CERN and the UN Library with an emphasis on promoting civic engagement.
